Artist Statement
My paintings are a meditation on the concept of ‘home,’ a small, meaningful point within a landscape. By blending the sentimental geometry of a house with the vast land and sky that surround it, I try to reach the universal connection we all have: our relationships with people, with nature, and with place.
As I move around the small town where I grew up and still live, I find inspiration for my art all around. I have the opportunity to drive through the same neighborhood streets and see the same houses that filled my early youth. And just a handful of minutes outside of the city limits, where I moved as a teen, are rolling hills and miles of highway-lined farmland. My community and the plots of earth around it are what inform most of my work.
My primary medium is acrylic paint, though I often incorporate pastel, watercolor, and pencil into my pieces. In addition to traditional brushes and palette knives, I like to use oversized or crude tools for applying and scraping back paint, creating texture and unexpected marks. My workflow tends to straddle between controlled and chaotic. As I make a careful line against a straight edge, I'm impelled to make a mess beside it with my next stroke.
It’s easy to see a field of crops or row of homes in a painting. My hope is that some viewers will find their own story--perhaps a memory from the old neighborhood or a once dearly held relationship they don’t think about too often anymore.
